on tamil cinema n its extrapolation to indian cinema….

ok people…the first of my broken promises…decided not to start where i left last time around. i have my reasons: i dont feel so pissed off today, i dont think george bush is going out of power and not all because the authorities are on my trail (they first thought it might indicate australia’s predicted score against india in the final, then very intelligently deduced that it was probably my cell phone number(india not being in the final) before unanimously agreeing that it is my ssn-probably fake too). so today im gonna write about something as far removed from america as can be. the american army may come to mind; their being in basra, lebanon, north korea and tanzania where a farmer spotted black, viscous liquid seeping through in his fields. but no, its not the american army either. ladies and gentlemen, presenting to you the second most paid actor in the whole of asia: rajnikanth;  and his bevy of pre-puberty heroines<amidst claps and cheers>

as a matter of fact, rajnikanth is shortly to announce his next project. he says it’s a short wait. 6 month old jugwinder kaul from jalandhar, who plays the female lead, is soon learning to say words other than ‘khaana’ and ‘sona’ and will soon b ready to mouth tamil dialogues. apparently she can learn tamil much faster and better than established tamil singers like udit narayan, sukhwinder singh. when asked about the potential linguistic diffiluties, rajnikanth retorted in kannada, ”she has already learnt to say ‘kaadhal’ and ‘parents’(pronounced paarants in tamil) which are the only two ‘tamil’ words heroines utter anyway.  so its not much of a concern. manisha managed pretty well in baba when she only knew how to say ‘baba’ in ‘tamil’. ur talking as tho it’s as impossible as linking all the rivers in the country.” irrefutable logic. in the aptly, though tentatively, titled ‘valiban’, rajnikanth plays an eighth standard student whose small family comprises three sisters in classes 1,2 and 3 respectively, a brother who is already a police officer at 7, ‘a’ widowed mother (father killed by jugwinder’s dad’s henchmen which is why the brother is in the police force). rajnikanth( valiban in the movie) provides for the abovementioned small family by  driving his employer (janakaraj) around in a yet-undecided mode of transport. when he’s not at school(which is always) he  hunts down the villain(john abraham?)’s henchmen with a pistol which has 6 degrees of freedom, shoots fire-water-wind-n-4-bullets-at-once, and can also be used as something to fondle the ‘young’ heroine (adds to his undying charisma n style). he also mouths punch dialogues like, ‘andavan manithan na valiban kezhavan’ which have gone with the masses as being nothing short of brilliant. rajnikanth says this 53 year trend of his movies being chartbusters will continue and valiban will create a new record. srividya, who played the female lead in one of his movies and has been leading a peaceful retired life for the past 27 years had this to say, “with rajni’s lips(?) looking less diseased and more glossier since my days, his lisp growing sweeter and his heroines getting younger, do u think valiban will run fewer days than baasha?? no way…”rajnikanth, who as a matter of fact, has starred in 783 movies and acted in 2, had high hopes too. he said, “valiban will be nominated for the oscars just as ‘paheli’ and other movies in the same mould were nominated before”.  bombay dyeing (shot to fame as costume designers for sarath kumar and nayanthara in that famous school song) is in charge of rajni’s wardrobe while tiruppur baniyan center is in charge of jugwinder’s (their claim to fame is translucent handkerchiefs-can-be-used-as-tops).

overall, this news has caused significant chaos all over tamil nadu. the fans r printing posters of rajni in the prospective project (shelved so far owing to heroine’s slower-than-expected growth rate), bursting crackers in toilets and drinking heavier than usual. one incident of note is a fan naming his new born ‘thalai’ as an acronym for thalaivar rajnikanth.

rajnikanth’s career, ageing, and indian cinema, all seem to be on a new high!!!

on the occident and the accident….

not all that infrequent, huh? well, sort of a newly-wed feeling. im just loving this blogging thingy. it’s drawn me away from so much work deep into itself without saying a word. trust me when i say i’m married (and surprisingly, totally into it). but it’s not a real marriage, is it? my wife is for the world to share (and comment on, lol). i kiss it goodbye when i leave for classes, keep checking in even between mouthfuls of meals, eagerly await evening reunions and what’s more, adorn my lovely with fresh, new attire everyday (notice the new look?) . am literally sleeping with it these days.  it’s my blood, my love, my life and it’s not an ever-so-nagging amazon.

so much for my bitch.  let’s move on to greener pastures; ull see what i mean. ladies and gentlemen, i’m in the united states of america. the occident, its allure, its rich culture (see, ur not laughing as loud as i am), its intoxicating aura. its inexplicable magnetism that has drawn many a brain-rich, pocket-empty soul into itself and given them an identity (well, at least a social security number). its magic that lassoed greats like einstein and ayn rand (how will it fail with parthasarathy and anathapadmanabhan who have just been swindled by shriram chits and are frantically looking out the window pondering how to invest their IQ of 150 into earning something in excess of the above mentioned IQ). the first thing that comes to mind -tada-’silly con’ valley(if this is not ur first time here, ur familiar with my spelling as well as my parantheses mania…if not, ull learn(assuming it’s not ur only time) but i’m digressing here). mite as well call it srinagar colony. the iyengar population in silicon valley has just crossed the iyer figure, long crossed the caucasian statistic, started off higher than the black statistic and will not reach the gujarati number. mylapore is concerned, “didnt we just beat triplicane into being the most iyengar-populated. now where the hell is silicon valley?? probably near arakaansaas or in teksaas or on the border between calipornia and frankfurt(?).” but who cares? that’s not what we’re talking about. we are, here, talking about the western world and its undying charisma. where else in the world can you drive at 100 mph but still not enjoy it (its legal), where else can you earn in millions but shop for undergarments in garage sales, where else can you dance yourself into a frenzy in night clubs when you have newly-bought (in garage sales too)-unopened books to read.

if you are not in the united states, it’s time you look out that window too cos it all goes for you. if ur reading this in india, for instance, you prabably have an IQ of 150 too, you are poor in all probability, you have never been ‘abroad’(jeez, its more enticing than ‘a broad’ to some i know) and are dying to earn your new identity (3245-564-6785). what’s more, the quota for H1B’s might increase, george bush may go out of power and iraq may cease to exist(strictly not in that order as u may have realised). for all the above n a lot more action…..GET HERE FAST!!!!

the angst is not all evaporated….to be continued….

in the company of solitude….

Filed under: A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom.,Uncategorized — sathya84 @ 10:15 pm

wrote this one for string theory. a very heartfelt piece on something we all experience and dread (even amongst a crowd) – solitude…but what i want to say through this piece is that solitude isn’t that depressing, as dreadful as it may sound…

Born the same day as I, my friend
With me will you die
The days between, with you beside
Only promise to fly.

Shared our childhood dreams, my friend
And the bitter truths of life
Talk of sunny days ahead
Oblivious of the icy rain.

Just like tears of joy, my friend
There are smiles of disdain
That present a face of gaiety and mask the real pain.

But they don’t fool you, my friend
As they fool the rest
Of all those who understood me
Buddy, you’re the best.

Amidst the prevailing chaos, my friend
Of words lashing all around
You seem to hear my silence
And the echoes that resound.

So glad to be born this way, my friend
Not even death can do us apart
Because I am you and you are I
And I’m your only friend.

the ringing of the division bell has begun….

welcome to my blog space, folks ( in fact, i have just been welcomed minutes ago myself). just wanted to explore for myself what this ‘blogging thing’ is about. i now have my own space and as i write, have also decided upon my own ‘style’. i will write as infrequently as i can, will not give a darn about using capital letters, will write as haphazardly as i can will use as few puntuations as i can(did i just leave out a comma? damn, i think i also misspelt ‘punctuation’ ) , will select very dry topics to showcase my very ordinary writing skills (some have been known to use my songs in place of silica gels) and will generally do my best to get maximum hits. thats how blogs work, or so i hear. dont wanna try anything daring and different. i also notice i’m using a lot of parantheses as i write ({[owe it all to functional analysis and numerical methods ]}). another thing, if u are looking for links to cool sites or forwards, get the hell outta here. thats not how i work (or play!!!). i will write my own poetry, post my own photos n upload my own songs i have composed for my own band and that way, earn my own share of well deserved hate mails. you wont find porn anywhere in these pages, too bad. they say my writing is pornographic enough.

so, have u figured out what i’ve been ranting about all this while? have u, sort of, zeroed in on the topic i’m writing on?? see, thats what i’ve been talking about.well, it’s actually this. welcome to my world. i choose to call it ‘the division bell’. for the uninitiated, it is the title of pink floyd’s second album without roger waters (and hence their second best album, but opinions differ). I’m a passionate pink Floyd fan and have been following every tidbit, every incident in their lives, musical or otherwise (did you know David gilmour’s great grand father was gay, heh heh..just kidding!). but is that reason enough? wait, there’s more to it than meets the thigh (that’s my own too :P ). the division bell is a concept, a symbol. the division bell is a bell that’s rung in the British house of commons to signal sessions to the members of parliament and is concerned with eternally opposing sides in a debate.. it is thus representative of communication and the lack thereof (remember what i said about writing infrequently). so with this at-least-i-would-call-it-aptly-christened blog space and the first of the infinitely many random rants, i’m all set to get started.

so u guys, now that u’re here, please drop in often (like the thief who frequented the same store cos it said “thank you, come again”….relax, im not calling you thieves), read my shit, participate, leave me comments and generally, keep this space active.

i promise to see u before the indian cricket team wins a world cup……

cheers

slumber

Filed under: A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom.,Uncategorized — sathya84 @ 2:42 pm

on something i’m so fascinated by as a phenomenon and so indulgent in, as an activity…slumber…

lying in bed waiting for her to come
in anticipation of the journey home
an experience transcending the horizon
the glimpse of an unvanquished kingdom

lost in the reminiscence of the day that hath been
i sense the footfalls of the queen
in her bright robes and crystal sequine
she still manages not to be seen

as her invisible fingers clasp mine
my senses fade in the dark sunshine
a strange sensation stronger than wine
makes me wonder whether im blind

we are in a netherworld in a flashing gleam
where dream is reality and reality a dream
where friends long dead come alive
and the bodies of the living float astream

i look at the queen, she smiles at me
here forever i want to be
that may’nt be, the queen she says
son, you are real but not this place

as she escorts me to where we started
back to the reality which we parted
sweat and toil and pledge all i earn
oh the queen, if only she’d return

the fall

Filed under: A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom.,Uncategorized — sathya84 @ 2:40 pm

this is a song i wrote the day arjun singh announced reservations. angry at the state and the state of affairs within, i sought an outlet. the band (we call oursleves ‘string theory’) jammed on it and recorded a prog rock song. this was rated in the top hundred in a world wide poll by soundclick…chk it out…

people rose in unison against the empire
the land was made fertile by their blood, sweat n toil
yet they didnt realise it was for a futile cause
the land they set free would burn in a funeral pyre

machinery that feeds on victim’s soul
will not produce but just consume
bandits n villains elected by law
will only spell a nation’s doom

seeds of intolerance sown in cavities
that were the hearts of a rational clan
sprout forth anger, hate and bigotry
well in tune with the looter’s plan

where arst thou, o ye intellect
you saved us once too many a time
lost in the collectivism of a shepherd’s herd
trained to think that to think is a crime

now i know how it feels like
to fall from dizzy heights of glory
that old saying forgotten by all
together we stand, divided we fall
